Home Owners At Last

We closed on our first house today. This has been a long and tedious process going on since the first week of December, but it actually happened. Yay! Now we can start cleaning and painting and fixing and carpeting (yup, you guessed it, it is a fixer upper). The previous owner had slightly different taste than we do. Although I do love a good shade of teal, I'm afraid that the whole living room in it might make me sea sick. And the coordinating deep red and navy blue in the kitchen will also be covered.
There is also a bedroom that we lovingly refer to as the "Cat Room". Although the urine stains and strong putrid stench might have clued us in as to the previous occupants, the dead giveaway was the cat door on the bedroom door. Now you who are the feline loving type don't get upset, I love cats as much as the rest of you, but darn it all, Dustin is allergic, so the smell (and pee and dander) must go.
Did I mention the nice people have different taste than us? Apparently they really liked to watch tv and were able to watch it in the storage shed as well as the house. We have three satellite dishes, so if anyone would like one, drop us a line. We also have a putting green in the backyard, so come spring, I can start working on my forestroke (OK, I can't even fake it, I don't know what to even call it). We really love the location and yard and believe it or not, we totally love the house and are so excited! I get a laundry room that doesn't double as a bathroom! I get cold storage! I get two fireplaces! My three children (soon to be four) won't be sharing one bedroom! And I get a Cat Room! (Well...I guess I'm not as excited for that one).

The Farm

This weekend we made a quick trip to Buhl, Idaho to see my grandparents. I have really been feeling like we needed to go up for about 3 years, 5 months and 20 days, but life always gets in the way. Then my grandma fell and had hip surgery. She also has Alzheimers and I really wanted to take the chance to go (for my own memories, and maybe a couple of my kid's). We always have a hundred excuses not to go--it is too cold, we have no money, the kids are sick. So this weekend, it was freezing, we have absolutely no money, and Avery has a runny nose--the perfect weekend to go!

We saw my grandma at the rehab center and she looked surprisingly good. She was able to talk to us for a while and seemed happy to have the kids there. We had Avery keep her distance and so hopefully we didn't pass our germs. It was amazing to see my grandpa and the love he has for her. He stays with her all day and just goes home at night to sleep. He told me that when he isn't there, she gets worried and asks for him. And so he stays by her side as he has for 60 years.

The next day after church we walked around the farm with the kids. Ahh, farm life. It was great growing up on a farm. Now lest you are confused, I didn't actually grow up on a farm, persay. But both of my parents did so every family vacation and weekend getaway of my childhood was either to the farm in Delta, or the farm in Idaho. On our tour I was able to show my kids where the cactus patch was that I fell into, and the spot on the electric fence where my cousin Kyle touched it and got shocked. I pointed out the old cellar and the raspberry patch and the big white propane tank looking thingy that we played on and the rope swing. Life is so simple when you are 10 and growin' up on a farm like I was (sort of). I guess that is why I felt the need to go back. Avery and Maren are old enough to remember and it is all so special to me. So we braved the cold and our bank account and the runny nose and went, and I'm really glad that we did.
FYI: As you may be able to tell, the above picture is about a second before I turned my head around to see the horse's nostrils about 1 cm from my face. Lovely.

Ice Skating

We took the kids ice skating on New Year's day at the Gallivan Center. It was a beautiful day for it and the kids had a blast. Even Ryan had fun and was sad when I took his oversized skates off. Poor Dustin (or poor Dustin's back) had to do all the work as I don't know how well my "basketball" would bounce if I were to do a belly flop on the ice.

It was so funny to watch their legs flip all over the ice like a fish on dry land. If you can get past my constant chipmunk laughter you'll see what I'm talking about.

And don't let Ryan's expressionless face fool you in this one. He was actually having a great time.
