Usually August is the month we spend getting ready for and school starting. This year, because of the unknown of the Corona virus, our ward planned Girl's Camp and Youth Conference for as far out as we could, hoping we could do them in person (back in March, we were still not meeting regularly in person). It ended up that most of the summer felt almost back to normal, and by August, Covid-19 numbers were beginning to rise again and we barely made Youth Conference before we were beginning to mask in public again. Plus, August is already a very busy month, with school sports starting, shopping to be done and back to school nights happening. It was an especially busy month for us as we were also getting Avery ready to move down to BYU and Dustin and I getting ready for our 20th anniversary trip to Iceland (which is a sad story that will follow all this fun stuff...). I was in charge of Girl's Camp and both Dustin and I attended that and Youth Conference, so it felt like a busier than usual August this year.
For Girl's Camp, our theme was "Ohana means family" in the hopes of unifying the girls after a solitary year of Covid. We spent a morning at Grantsville Reservoir and then camped in the Grantsville mountains at the Upper Narrows Campground. We had a great time and it did feel unifying to be there together!
Us leaders surprised the girls with our matching pineapple onesies the first night. I now know what my preschool Halloween costume will be this year...
A dead rattlesnake and a fun hike in our smoke-filled mountains. It was smoke from California, but I had some real worries that we were going to have to be evacuated by helicopter from our narrow canyon if it was on fire.
The ranger told us about a spot near our camp where we could hunt for trilobites and fossils and that was pretty cool.
The camp swing.
We had so many fun things to do during those 2 days. And still plenty of time to relax and eat delicious food. It was a great camp.
A week and a half later it was time for Youth Conference. Our youth stayed in a big house at Bear Lake and even though it ended up being too rainy to play at the lake, we had fun with tournaments and watching movies and playing games together. We also toured the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers museum in Logan and had a swim party in the backyard of someone in our ward. The day before Dustin and I arrived, the youth did an adventure park with ziplines and ropes courses and other fun things. It was a fun youth conference.
Dustin's 3rd or 4th great grandpa was in the museum.
It was a fun 3 days with our ward! And school started just a couple of days later!
