The Hunt

Last weekend marked the beginning of a new era for Dustin. He went on his first ever Hunt. My parents came up for the weekend and my dad took Dustin with him Elk Hunting. My dad comes from a long line of hunter-gatherers. He grew up in Delta. So he has an innate drive that forces him to buy a tag and load up the gear and head into the wild frontier.
This year we had another succesful Hunt. Now, lest you mistake this for what it really is, let me explain The Hunt to you. Opening morning of The Hunt, you are out the door at the crack of dawn: approximately 7:04 am. If you didn't get up early enough to eat, you may stop at McDonald's and grab a breakfast sandwich. Then you drive in your Altima up the nearest Canyon for a while. Then you find a great meadow and throw on some bright orange and get out of the car and take a few pictures of everyone holding the gun.
Then you sit in the meadow and wait for your Elk to come to you. But you get bored after a few minutes and so you whine to Dad until he gives in and you set up a target and shoot the heck out of it (Dustin probably didn't whine, but I did as a child--I never whine now).
It makes you really happy to shoot a gun. After all this Hunting, you are starving so everyone piles back in the car and eats lots of yummy treats and turns the heat on full blast (because it is really cold to hunt). We talk and laugh and take pictures and eat and wear orange and shoot a gun and stuff like that. The only way my dad is killing anything is if it runs in front of his car. Hunting is so cool. Everyone should be Hunters.

Wow, both dad and Dustin hit their targets in exactly the same place! They must be expert marksmen.

I wish so bad I could have gone this year. I cried when I saw the picture of dad in the mountains. I wish I could have been there for that.

I love a good hunt. I wonder if dad is secretly embarrassed by our descriptions of hunting. If you are dad, just know, we love you and probably would never have gone with you again if you actually shot something.

love to the wibergs!!!! and sweet background.

The deer in question was shot by Taylor, but Aaron held the tag. Taylor can hunt next year. Aaron was just giving her some practice and she really got one.

I love the way you hunt. If the animal is not going to come to you, then why should you go and look for it? To Dustin I tip my hat for the first hunting excursion, the next thing you know he will be hunting a bear and you too will have a bear skin rug.

Had we known the real way to hunt we would have started as a family YEARS ago! THanks for the enlightenment! We thought you had to tromp through snow and pull an animal the size of our family on a tarp through 18 inches of the white stuff! We were WAY off!

this is greatest, saddest hunting story I have ever heard in my life. But at least your goals were met. It looks like those were some good kill shots on the target beast, how long did it take to gut out? I hope they went and relaxed after the long hall out of those to heavy kills. I also went hunting and have once again met my goal, yes to most hunters that means there was blood.

You got the breakfast wrong, it was Carl's Jr's - breakfast burritos, etc with apple fritters and pop for the treat from
Chevron. To a real hunter, shooting the heck out of a target is sighting in the gun. It was a fun day. Dad

I think I have gotten lazy about huntin, the last few years. I do hunt with a neighbor also the last two years, and we really work. I wrote a blog on Fridays hunt here in Southern Utah. I guess if the result is the same (no deer or elk), why not sleep till 6am, hike very little, take a few pictures, and come home early. What makes it fun also is visiting with family or friends. Dad

SO FUNNY! Kevin's version of hunting is to trap skunks, then open the trap, run like H@**, turn and shoot the thing. Except that their is a good chance said skunk was already dead. As in all good Karma, my dog and I were sprayed less than a week later. I think I'll send Kev hunting with your dad next time.
