With temperatures way above average, we have been having lots of fun around here. In fact, it was a very nice January for me (January is usually my least favorite month--I need sunlight!). On Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, we took the kids for a little drive to the West to find the Salt Flats. This is a bucket list item for us, and it did not disappoint. It was a couple of hours away, and we really only spent about an hour there, but it is such a unique thing that we felt very entertained.
It looks like the snow that we have missed this month, but it isn't! It is tons and tons of salt. We proved it by tasting it. Very salty salt. We did not, however, prove any sort of cleanliness of the salt before we tasted it. We aren't quite that scientific.
Our dog liked it for a little while. Then it started to irritate her little paws and she ended up hanging out in the van for the last few minutes.
Super flat. Super amounts of salt. I guess that is where they came up with the name.
We tried so hard to get a shot of us all in the air. And we came so close. But we had a lot of fun trying, and some of our poses came out awesome.
A few days later we got actual snow! Like, a foot of it! And it melted a couple of days after that. But we had fun with it while it lasted (and, I'm not really complaining if it melts fast. That's my idea of a good snowstorm).
We discovered that our dog is a snow dog. She played in the snow with us for 2 hours! And, even without a leash, she stayed close and played with the kids. She bounded like a little deer and didn't seem at all bothered by the cold.
Our nephew, Ammon, left on a mission to Cambodia! An awesome by-product of living so close to the airport was that Dustin got to be the chauffeur/missionary companion of Ammon. Nothing but handshakes for me though. We grabbed him from the airport at 9:30, he was in bed by 10:30 and up by 6:30 (good little missionary), and we took him down to Provo after the kids got off to school. We had so much fun taking him shopping for last minute items, eating his last McDonald's with him, visiting old dorm friends (briefly) and then sending him off for two years to serve the Lord!
Avery ran in a race and it wasn't too cold at all.
Maren participated in the Science Fair and did a great job.
And she got braces!!
Beautiful (and painful) new smile!
We had a beautiful sunset ("Red at night, sailor's delight" Or is it "Red at night, sailors take flight?" I never can remember. Either way, pretty sunset.)
We watched our nephews for the weekend, while their parents finished up a Hawaii trip. And, it was actually a really cold day to be playing at the park. But, kids never seem to care.
