Family Time

Dustin had a birthday.  His 41st, to be exact.  Every year, when we ask him what kind of cake he wants, he gives the same reply, "something with gummy worms".  This year, I thought it would be fun to do a tricky cake.  It looks like there are no gummy worms decorating his cake this year...
Until you cut it open and all the gummies come tumbling out!  Bwa ha ha!  For Dustin's birthday, we went to eat at Pizza Pie Cafe with Gramma Lana, and then to the high school's production of Clue.  Then back to the house for a late night birthday cake.  We love Dustin and we are thankful for him!  Life is always more fun when Dustin is around.  He makes us all happy.

A couple of days later was Fall Break for our kids.  We had planned to go to Denver, but Grant and I both ended up with sore throats a few days before we were going to be there.  The morning of Fall Break, we woke up feeling significantly better, and we felt like we needed to take the opportunity to go see Dustin's dad and step mom, Kathy.  Kathy has cancer, and she handled our visit like a champ!

We went as far as Glenwood Springs on Thursday, and stayed in a hotel there that night.  We boarded Pepper there in Glenwood Springs, and then we went to dinner and swimming at the hot springs pool there.

The next morning we took a self guided tour of the Hotel Colorado, where President Roosevelt used to stay.  It is also the place where the Teddy Bear got its name, named after Teddy Roosevelt.

After we picked up Pepper, we took a quick walk up to the local cemetery to see the graves of Doc Holiday and Kid Curry.
Along the way we stopped at a rest stop so the kids could see the snow.  It's funny how exciting this is at the beginning of the season.
When we finally made it to Grandpa and Grandma's house, this cutie came to see us!  Our littlest nephew, Ole.

Grandpa took us for rides in his hot rod.  And, he even let us have a turn driving!  We only stayed for a day.  We didn't want to overwhelm Grandma too much, and I had meetings on Sunday morning that I needed to be to.  But, it was a fun trip and a fun Fall Break.

Later in the week Grandma and Grandpa Shurtz flew in from a visit to Illinois, so we picked them up from the airport and they visited for a couple of hours before heading home.  I'm very thankful for family (but wait!  That is our next season!).
